Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a treatment last?
The treatment itself lasts between 30 - 45 minutes depending on tolerance and level of build up waste.
However, I like to book 90 minute slots for first time clients and 75 minutes for returning clients.
How far does the tube go?
The tube connects to a speculum which is gently inserted no more than a couple of inches inside the rectum whilst laying on your side.
Will there be a mess and does it smell?
A closed gravity system is used, therefore, there is no smell.
Occasionally if we reach gas, there can be some push back onthe speculum. This is nothing to worry about and it will gently be removed for you to use the toilet before getting back onto the couch to continue should you wish to.
Can a colonic perforate the bowel?
A colonic irrigation does not carry this risk as the pressure of the water entering is low. The temperature and volume of water entering is controlled.
Can you retrain the colon?
Yes, the large colon is a muscle approximately 5 feet long. By releasing impacted faecal matter, the bowel can be toned and trained.
I don't know if I'm constipated as I have diarrhoea
Diarrhoea can also be a form of constipation known as overflow. This is where loose stool is passing over and around hard and dry impacted stool. A colonic can help, however, you should first see a medical specialist if you suspect you have overflow to confirm.
How will I feel during a colonic?
Most people feel well in themselves during a colonic. However, some people may experience nausea, shivering, headaches, cramping and even light headed. This is due to the toxins moving around during a colonic.
How will I feel after a colonic?
Most people feel well in themselves and even feel an increase in energy levels. Some clients do experience what we call the 'healing crisis'. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, stomach cramps and feeling tired. These are normal responses to a colonic as the large colon is a muscle that has essentially just been given a work out.
These side effects are short lived.
You will receive an aftercare form with more information and you are always encouraged and welcome to contact us should you have any questions following a colonic irrigation.
Will my bowel be completely empty after a colonic?
No, the colon will never be completely empty as we eat regularly and the digestive system is constantly working. The aim of a colonic is to restore effective bowel function.
Regardless of how often an individual opens their bowels, it is impossible to clear the entire colon in one treatment as it is approximately 5ft long.
Does a colonic irrigation wash out all of the good bacteria in the bowel?
The human gut consists of over 100 trillion bacteria, both good and bad.
By removing accumulated waste, good bacteria can thrive. You will be offered a Probiotic following treatment to put your mind at ease. The gut microbiome typically restores itself within 2-4 weeks but the process can start as early as 48 hours.
What should I do following the treatment?
You can continue with your day as normal. You should avoid any foods that you know can irritate your stomach and avoid alcohol and spicy foods.
What is the difference between a colonic irrigation and an enema?
An enema is where approximately 1 litre of water only reaches the sigmoid part of the colon and stays there until released on the toilet.
A colonic irrigation is where approximately 75 litres of water is used per treatment (depending on each client and the results/tolerances). Warm water enters slowly into the descending colon, across the transverse colon and down the ascending colon before reaching the cecum valve.
